Olaf and Christina Jäder, Swedish immigrants, Great Grandparents

Updated: Jan 17, 2023

A couple years ago, I stopped at Lund Cemetery in Decatur County, Kansas and paid respects to great grandparents Kristina Olsdotter Jäderborg (1858-1950) and Olaf Andersson Jäder (1854-1929). They emigrated from Järbo, Gävleborg, Sweden in 1882 with their daughter Karin (1881-1935). Here is the family's listing among the emigrants who left Sweden on the steamship Orlando on 16 June 1882.

First stop was Detroit in Dickenson County, Kansas, and then on to Enterprise, KS near where Kristina's father Olof Olsson Jäderborg Sr. (1821-1906), mother Karin Märta Hansdotter (1823-1902) and brother Olof Olsson Jäderborg, Jr. (1892-1952) lived and farmed. They resided there for a while, during which time second daughter Elizabeth Olive Jäder (1883-1973) was born. The Jäders sat for this photograph in Enterprise, KS shortly after Lizzie was born.

Elizabeth was born in Dickenson County, Kansas, shortly before the Jäder family moved to a 160 acre homestead in Decatur County, Kansas. Sometime before 1888 (the year daughter Julia was born in Oberlin, Decatur, KS) the Jäder family moved to Decatur County, KS, where Olaf received a patent for 160 acres on 6 Sep 1890 under the Homestead Act of 1862. Daughter Anna Clara was born in 1891 and son Andrew was born in 1893.

Olaf Jader's homestead in the NW1/4 of Section 12. Later, Olaf acquired the NE1/4. The SE1/4 was homesteaded by Louis Jaderborg, a presumed relative of Kristina, who received his land patent the same day as Olaf Jader received his, 6 Sep 1890.

Here are videos of the cemetery and of the original Jäder homestead I shot on June 3, 2020.
